Description of the Retreat

Dhamma Dipa (Island of Dhamma) is one of the many centres around the world dedicated to the practice of Vipassana meditation as taught by S. N. Goenka.

It is situated in Herefordshire in the west of England. Residential meditation courses are held here throughout the year. Courses are also held at non-centre sites in East Anglia, Sussex, Ireland and elsewhere from time to time. Dhamma Dipa is owned and managed by Vipassana Trust, a registered educational charity.

Dhamma Dipa, the UK Vipassana meditation centre, is a 22-acre property set in rolling farmland between Hereford and Ross-on-Wye. Purchased in 1991, its peaceful location is ideally suited to serious meditation. The centre can accommodate about 130 students and courses are held all year round, with over 2500 people from all walks of life taking a Vipassana retreat here each year.

The on-going running of Dhamma Dipa is the responsibility of Vipassana Trust, a registered educational charity. The trustees are appointed on a yearly basis. They are all old students, that is those who have already completed a ten-day course in this tradition.

Teaching and serving (working) on courses is always done on a voluntary basis. The day to day running of the centre is largely done by volunteers, although the Trust employs two part-time office staff.
Introduction to Vipassana meditation

Vipassana means “to see things as they really are”. It is a process of self-purification by self-observation. It is an ancient technique from India, which was originally taught by the Buddha. The teaching is universal and not connected with any religious organisation and can be practised by anyone without conflict with existing religious beliefs or absence of beliefs. For those who are not familiar with Vipassana Meditation we recommend visiting the International Vipassana Website for an introduction.
